In 2003. a small group of physicists from Abilene Chiristian University (Michael Sadler, Shon Watson) and Tuzla (Jugoslav Stahov - at the time visiting professor at ACU) started a new Partial Wave Analysis of pion-nucleon scattering data. It was a continuation of a long term collaboration of ACU, University Karlsruhe and University of Tuzla. The goal was a resurrection of methods used in the famous KH PWA in order to analyse a large number of new pion-nucleon scattering data.
After promising initial results, a group decided to organize The First International Workshop on Pion-Nucleon Partial-Wave Analysis at ACU, inviting experts working on the same or very similar problems to join their efforts. A positive reaction came from Zagreb (Alfred Švarc, Saša Ceci) and Helsinki (Mikko Sainio, Pekko Metsä). The First PWA workshop was organised at ACU in Summer 2004. Second was held in Zagreb, third in Tuzla. In 2015 the 8th PWA workshop was combined with 3rd Workshop on Partial-Wave Analysis Tools for Hadron Spectroscopy, and since then workshop is held as PWA/ATHOS.
PWA8/ATHOS3 workshop paid tribute to Prof. Gerhard Höhler (1921-2014), who was most famous for his work on pion-nucleon scattering, dispersion relations and Baryon resonances. Some people call him Father of Pion-Nucleon Physics, and his famous book The Höhler Bible.
